An anime adaptation of the Tono to Inu (The Lord and the Dog) manga has been announced via a post to X, which reads, “✨ A Tono to Inu anime has been decided ✨ The teaser site has been released. Please wait patiently for a while…zzz.” This captioned a celebratory image which can be viewed below. A new website has also been opened.
Announced on January 24, 2024, Tono to Inu follows other manga by publisher Flex Comix to receive an anime adaptation, including The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch — which aired from October to December 2023 and finished in the top 50 of Anime Corner’s Fall 2023 Anime of the Season Rankings — Nyan Koi!, and Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It, whose second season finished 18th in the Spring 2022 Rankings.
An anime adaptation of Rie Nishida’s Tono to Inu manga also continues the popular trend of pet owner anime, such as My Roommate is a Cat, this season’s Dog Signal, and perhaps even Chained Soldier. Nishida’s manga has been collected into 2 volumes, with the third set to be released in Japan on February 15, 2024.
Flex Comix’s Comic Polaris magazine describes Tono to Inu:
Although there was a time when the world of the Warring States was full of the activities of demon-like warriors, that time has long since passed. Now, the once-powerful have fallen into poverty and live in shabby tenements. One such person is the lord. The lord who had reached out his hand in pity to a strange-looking dog with short legs was bewildered by the mischievousness of his new retainer. ‘What is this? A dog that can do such things?’ The lord, who looked fierce, and the cheerful dog lived together in peace and harmony!
