The Bullbuster anime is based on a mixed-media project of the same name created by P.I.C.S. It first started as a concept book released in November 2017 and then got a novel series adaptation written by Hiroyuki Nakao and illustrated by Eisaku Kubonouchi. The novel has been serialized by Kadokawa since December 2018.
Bullbuster follows the story of a young engineer named Tetsuro Okino, who transfers to a vermin extermination company called Hato Industries alongside the robot Bullbuster, which he developed himself. Upon arriving at the company, he discovers how Hato Industries has little money, and what’s more, its president Tajima objects to the Bullbuster. For the president, there are fuel costs for robots, labor costs for pilots, and of course, wasting even a single bullet is unacceptable. Between their clash of ideas of extermination and the reality of budgets, one could wonder what the future holds for Hato Industries.
The mixed media project also released a second special visual in collaboration with the city of Kitakyushu in the Kyushu prefecture.
