Black Butler: Public School Arc anime ended yesterday with a post-credits scene that teased the Emerald Witch Arc. The arc takes place in Germany and the post-credits scene of the “His Butler, Taking Off” episode features a pair of German-speaking nobles who ignore a warning given to them by an old woman.
The Emerald Witch Arc is the eighth arc of the Black Butler manga series. It spans volumes 18-22, beginning with chapter 86 and ending with chapter 107. Although not officially announced as an anime, it would be a direct sequel to the Public School arc.
Yana Tobo’s manga was first adapted into anime by studio A-1 Pictures in 2008. The studio animated the first two seasons, and although the second season diverts from the manga, the sequel, Book of Circus, returns to the source material. Book of Circus was followed by Book of Murder OVA and Book of the Atlantic movie.
Black Butler: Public School Arc is the sequel to the Book of Atlantis, which premiered in 2017. Studio CloverWorks animated the highly-anticipated sequel with Kenjiro Okada (March Comes in Like a Lion) as the director and Hiroyuki Yoshino on the series composition. Yumi Shimizu is in charge of the character designs. Ryo Kawasaki is composing the music. Maaya Sakamoto and Daisuke Ono repaired their roles as Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian Michaelis. Their English dub counterparts, Brina Palencia and J. Michael Tatum, whom Anime Corner recently interviewed, also returned.
Crunchyroll is streaming the anime and describes the plot as:
Ciel Phantomhive is the most powerful boy in all of England, but he bears the scars of unspeakable suffering. Forced to watch as his beloved parents were brutally murdered, Ciel was subsequently abducted and violently tortured. Desperate to end his suffering, the boy traded his own soul for a chance at vengeance, casting his lot with the one person on whom he could depend: Sebastian, a demon Butler summoned from the very pits of hell. Together, they’ll prowl the darkest alleys of London on a mission to snuff out those who would do evil.
The Black Butler manga is going on indefinite hiatus this summer as the author prepares for the story’s climax.
