Tow Ubukata wrote Bye Bye, Earth; the original printed novel features illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano. The novel’s original publishing run included two published volumes through Kadokawa Shoten. A four-volume reprint featuring illustrations by Kim Hyung Tae was published between September 22, 2007, and February 28, 2008. Bye Bye, Earth has a four-volume manga adaptation by Ryu Asahi. The Shonen Gahosha-published manga ran between January 30, 2020, and July 29, 2022.
The story takes place in a world where people have kemonomimi (literally means “animal ears”) attributes. However, Belle Lablac, the lead heroine, displays none of these qualities. Knowing she’s unique, she decides to leave her hometown and become a nomad and search for answers to her origins. While initially, it seems that she’ll have an invaluable asset through her journey as she’s trained by famed swordsman Sian Lablac, she finds herself unable to harm anyone. Instead, she has to resort to breaking people’s swords in battle, an action that’s universally frowned upon. Plagued by her appearance and ostracized by her fighting style, Belle faces countless struggles as she looks for her true home.
