The Cat and the Dragon (Neko to Ryu) is officially getting a TV anime adaptation, with a teaser visual and trailer released. The announcement was made on February 22, which is celebrated as “Cat Day” in Japan, making the reveal fitting for the cat-centric story.
Originally written by Amara and illustrated by Mai Okuma, The Cat and the Dragon began as a series of short stories on the web novel platform Shosetsuka ni Naro from September 2013 to June 2014. Following its popularity, it was picked up by Takarajimasha for a print release in April 2016. The series has since also been adapted into a manga adaptation by Izumi Sasaki, which is serialized on Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! Web since September 2017, with ten volumes available as of June 2024. The light novel series currently has six released volumes.
A Tale of a Dragon Raised by Cats
The Cat and the Dragon is a heartwarming fantasy story that follows a dragon raised by cats, exploring its journey alongside its feline family and interactions with humans. The series also boasts achieving the top spot in Shosetsuka ni Naro’s daily rankings, an uncommon feat for a short-form story.
Celebration and Teaser Release
To commemorate the anime adaptation, original creators Amara and Mai Okuma shared their excitement, along with special illustrations from Okuma and Sasaki.
Amara (Original Creator):
Thanks to the many people who have loved The Cat and the Dragon, we have been given the opportunity for an anime adaptation.
I would be delighted if you could enjoy this new world, which is different from the novel and manga.
Mai Okuma (Character Designer):
Congratulations on the anime adaptation of The Cat and the Dragon!
About nine years ago, I had my first opportunity to work on The Cat and the Dragon.
Now, seeing it develop into something so wonderful fills me with immense joy.
I’ve even heard stories of the books being placed in school libraries—it’s such a heartwarming and gentle story that I truly love.
Now, as an anime, I believe it will touch the hearts of many more people and bring them comfort.
Izumi Sasaki (Manga Artist):
It’s really becoming an anime!
It’s going to move! It’s going to talk! Uncle Hane! Mama Nyan! Kurobane! Shirotae!
I’m so excited to see The Cat and the Dragon in a way that’s different from both the novel and manga, uniquely brought to life through animation.
I’m truly overjoyed! I can’t wait to see it!
Additionally, a teaser trailer featuring art from the manga was released, giving fans a first glimpse of the adaptation. While the voice cast was not revealed, the teaser includes the voice of the Cat Dragon, sparking anticipation for further updates.
