Sound Euphonium (stylized as Sound! Euphonium) is adapted from a light novel series written by Ayano Takeda and illustrated by Nikki Asada. Takarajimasha published the novel, which ran from December 2013 until June 2024, with a total of 14 volumes released. There is also a 3-volume manga by Hami.
The first season of the anime adaptation by Kyoto Animation premiered in April 2015, with Season 2 following in 2016. Season 3 followed a long in 2024, concluding in June of that year. There were also two movies between the first and second TV anime seasons—Sound Euphonium: Our Promise: A Brand New Day (2019) and Sound Euphonium: Ensemble Contest Arc (2023).
Yen Press licensed Sound Euphonium’s novels in English, describing the story:
Finding herself, one note at a time…After a terrible disappointment at the All-Kyoto Concert Band Competition, music has lost its spark for Kumiko. But her first year at Kitauji High School is a chance for a fresh start. So when it comes time to choose a club, she can’t resist joining the band again–even though they’re simply terrible. The strict new club director has promised to whip them into shape to reach Nationals, but the trouble runs deeper than just a lack of practice. Plus, the discord within the club tugs at Kumiko’s old insecurities. Will Kitauji High School find its rhythm before the competition? Will Kumiko?
