At the 43rd annual Japan Academy Prizes that happened on Friday, Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You film managed to win the Animation of the Year award. Other nominated movies were Her Blue Sky, Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire, Lupin III THE FIRST, and One Piece Stampede.
Director of the Year award was given to Hideki Takeuchi for his work on Tonde Saitama. Shinsuke Satō was also nominated for that reward.
On the other hand, RADWIMPS won the Outstanding Achievement in Music award for music they made for Weathering With You film.
Screenplay of the Year award went to Tonde Saitama’s Tomokazu Tokunaga and award for Outstanding Achievement in Film Editing to the film’s Shinji Kawamura. The same film also got nominated in the best picture, actor, actress, supporting actor, cinematography, art direction, and sound recording categories.
Japan Academy Prizes are presented by The Nippon Academy-Sho Association every year. It’s a Japanese group that can be roughly compared to Sciences of Oscars fame for example.
Movies were eligible if they opened in cinemas between December 16, 2018, and December 15, 2019.
