Season 2 of Tokyo Mew Mew New has been announced for April 2023. The first season ended earlier today. An announcement trailer is now available:
The original Tokyo Mew Mew anime aired for 52 episodes from 2002 to 2003. Studio Pierrot animated it. Tokyo Mew Mew New (stylized as Tokyo Mew Mew New~♡) is a reboot, announced for the 20th anniversary of the manga. It is animated by Yumeta Company and Graphinica, and directed by Takahiro Natori. The anime is streaming on HIDIVE, which describes the plot as:
The scientists of the μ(Mew) Project use DNA of endangered species to create a team of heroines imbued with amazing abilities. Armed with the skills of an Iriomote cat, Ichigo must band together with other Mew Mew girls to repel an alien incursion.
The main cast includes:
- Yuki Tenma as Ichigo
- Ryoko Jyuni as Lettuce
- Mirai Hinata as Mint
- Momoka Ishi as Zakuro
- Rian Toda as Fong Pudding
The anime is based on the Tokyo Mew Mew manga, which started serialization in 2002. The manga was written by Reiko Yoshida, while Mia Ikumi did the art. The manga ran from 2000 to 2003, with a sequel titled Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode that started in 2003 and ended in 2004. The sequel was written and illustrated by Mia Ikumi. Tokyo Mew Mew: 2020 Re-Turn – a 2-chapter sequel to the original series, ran from 2019 to 2020, with Reiko Yoshida returning to write the story and Ikumi doing the art. Mia Ikumi passed away earlier this year.
