Netflix: More Than Half of Current User Base Watch Anime

The popular streaming platform Netflix unveiled that more than half of its current registered users worldwide are tuning in to anime series licensed on their platform. In addition, Netflix noted that 90% of their Japanese users have used the platform to watch anime.

This fact was unveiled by Kohei Obara, director for anime creative at Netflix, during an interview with Variety. The statement was made during Netflix’s participation at the recently-concluded AnimeJapan 2022 event, where some of this year’s most-anticipated titles were announced.

From diversifying our slate to bringing back fan favorites, we want to continue growing our members’ discovery and love for anime, both in Japan and around the world with this next chapter of anime on Netflix.

Some of those titles being unveiled at Netflix’s segment for AnimeJapan this year include Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, Spriggan, Ultraman, Thermae Romae Novae, among others. Netflix has been ramping up its anime catalog in the past few months, making collaborations with animation studios such as CLAMP and WIT Studio, as well as with other big animation studios such as MAPPA, NAZ, Science SARU, and Studio Mir.

According to Insider Intelligence, Netflix has around 214 million global paid memberships for the third quarter of 2021. This was an increase from their 16 million subscribers during the third quarter of 2020.
