Scarlet Nexus Episode 7: Opposing Heroes

Scarlet Nexus Episode 7 shows viewers to a new status quo in the story. Yuito gets to take charge of his own team, being a first time captain. Kasane, on the other hand, takes on new responsibilities while on Karen Travers’ side. This episode sets up a lot for Scarlet Nexus’ story moving forward. Let’s look into it in a spoiler-filled discussion!

Yuito Sumeragi: Hero of New Himuka

Scarlet Nexus Episode 7 picks up from where the story left off. Yuito gets to take charge of his own platoon. He is being thrust into the role of “hero” for New Himuka. However, while this should be an exciting moment for him, things are not what they seem.

First of all, Yuito does not remember getting the role of captain. In fact, his memories are all rather jumbled. His disjointed thoughts even lead him to go as far as to seek help at the infirmary. What’s even stranger is that everyone else’s memory seems fine. His team mates all recall him being appointed captain, which makes the gap in Yuito’s memories even more confusing.

Yuito’s memories appear to have been tampered with.

This unsettling aspect of the story is a very interesting addition. Based on the previous episode, viewers know that Yuito becoming New Himuka’s hero is what leads the world to ruin. Perhaps him realizing that something is not quite right is the way to righting the wrongs of the future. If Yuito can be led to a path that has him confronting the government, perhaps the bleak future Kasane had seen can be avoided.

However, this is still a big “if”. Yuito is still being thrust into the role of hero for New Himuka. As of now, things are on course to end in ruin. Only time will tell if there can be enough change to avoid this end.

Kasane Randall: Hero of Seiran

Conversely, Kasane also gets appointed to a captain position. This parallels Yuito’s appointment directly, and further emphasizes that the two really are connected in one way or another. This episode also highlights what exactly pushes Kasane on. Viewers learn that beyond learning about the bleak future, finding Naomi in this chaos still is her utmost priority.

Scarlet Nexus Episode 7 also shows that despite being on the same side, Kasane and Karen Travers are not completely on the same page. They clash at around the midpoint of this episode. Karen knows that Kasane has been to the future, and wants to know what she saw. Kasane, on the other hand, wants more information about where Naomi is being held. Of course, Karen does not tell her.

Kasane and Karen have clashing personalities.

Kasane’s side of the story leads to questions about who can be trusted. Karen Travers, at multiple times throughout the story, has been an antagonistic character. However, he’s also proven to have some very valid points. Him clashing with Kasane constantly implies that there’s a more underlying suspicious element in his character too.

Kasane seems to have be levelheaded regarding how she goes about finding Naomi. But hopefully she also realizes that she may just be swimming in shark infested waters here. For her sake, hopefully she remains on her toes.

What happened to Nagi?

Yuito’s adventures lead him to a seemingly abandoned facility. It’s there that he and his team follow a lead. Supposedly, Nagi is being held there. Of course, as is the case with many things in the show, things are not what they seem.

Entering the facility leads to a fierce battle between the team and a bunch of Others. The group fight valiantly in spectacular fashion. When the dust settles, they are left with a rather startling sight. Nagi, who appears as they slay the last of the Others, glares at the team. Things appear to be shaping into a battle between them.

Nagi doesn’t look happy to see Yuito.

Poor Nagi. Since the events of the third episode, he hasn’t been the same. Who knows what exactly has happened to him. One thing’s for sure: it’s not good. Previous episodes implied that he’s been brainwashed, and that still looks to be the case here. Is this still the doing of the New Himuka government? Is he still under the control of some third party? Who knows? It’s too early to say, but what’s certain is that this is a huge problem for Yuito and company.

Honestly, it’s been kind of easy to forget about Nagi recently. He hasn’t had any role to play in the story in a while. Ultimately, it seems like his role is to provide another way to compare Yuito and Kasane. While Kasane looks for Naomi, Yuito looks for Nagi. Something like that. It does feel a little bit cheap at this point. Of course, that could change moving forward. All it takes is some story development. After all, there is a lot of interesting ways Nagi’s story can end up shaping up.

Interesting parallels

This week’s Scarlet Nexus episode slows things down. With the excitement of receiving some answers in the previous episode, Scarlet Nexus Episode 7 had to scale things back a bit. That may be a bit disappointing for some, but in the grand scheme of things, this isn’t too bad.

What’s most interesting about this episode is how it drives home the parallels between Yuito and Kasane. Both are the “figureheads” of opposing sides. They have similar powers. Both have people they care about who have been victims of the conflict. Though it’s a bit unsubtle, the show’s done a great job of establishing these two main characters as two sides of the same coin, in a way. The connection between the two is incredibly solid, and will no doubt be a big part of Scarlet Nexus’ story as it develops.

Scarlet Nexus is streaming on Funimation and on the Ani-One Asia Official YouTube channel! Episode 8 comes out on August 19th!
