Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint anime adaptation was just announced at the Anime Expo 24. Crunchyroll and Aniplex are teaming up to bring the series to our screen under the Omniscient Reader title.
Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint (also known as just Omniscient Reader) series started as a web novel by the writer duo singNsong. It was serialized from 2018 to 2020 with a total of 551 chapters (available on Webnovel in English). The series was later published by Munpia in Korean (in both physical and digital versions) – some changes have been made to this edition without affecting the original web novel. The webtoon adaptation began serialization in 2020 on Naver Webtoon. It was adapted by Umi (REDICE STUDIO) and illustrated by the Sleepy-C artist group (part of 3D2S studio). LINE Webtoon is publishing the webtoon in English. Ize Press announced that it picked up the physical releases for both the webtoon and the novel in July of last year.
Ize Press published the first volume of Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint in December of 2023. The plot is described as:
As a struggling office worker, Dokja Kim’s sole joy in life is an online novel so obscure that he’s its only reader. Then one day the story comes to an end…and so does the world. People all around the globe suddenly find themselves being massacred by horrific monsters or pitted against each other in sadistic scenarios straight out of the novel. However, only Dokja is aware that this is merely the first chapter of what is to come. Knowing that devastating plot twists are on the horizon, he can no longer afford to sit back as a reader—it’s time for Dokja to step up and write his own destiny!
Anime Corner had an opportunity to attend a Q&A session with Sleepy-C’s head artist at Anime NYC 2023. During the event, the artist mentioned what they expected from the potential adaptation:
“I would be so grateful if someone animated this. I don’t mind any [specific] studios or directors. My main focus is that whoever [it is] is really into the novel or the webtoon, someone who knows all about the characters and stories of Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint… [if they animate it] based on that knowledge and experience that is more gratifying and great for me.”
