SEGA’s Yakuza franchise is getting a live-action series titled Like a Dragon: Yakuza and slated for an October 24 release date on Amazon Video Prime. Take Masaharu is directing the six-part series with Takimoto Kengo. Kamen Rider’s Takeuchi Ryoma is playing Kiryu Kazuma.
The series will drop on Prime Video in two parts: the first three episodes are coming on October 24, while the remaining three will premiere on November 1. They will be available in both subtitled and dubbed options.
Sean Crouch and Nakamura Yugo are doing the screenplay and story, while Yasuhiro Yoshida and Kana Yamada are in charge of the Japanese version. Prime Video describes Like a Dragon: Yakuza in a statement: The series “showcases modern Japan and the dramatic stories of these intense characters, such as the legendary Kazuma Kiryu, that games in the past have not been able to explore.”
The plot will be set in 1995 and 2005 and it will follow the life of a fearsome yakuza, with a focus on his childhood.
The TV show will expand on the Yakuza video game franchise, which started as an action-adventure game developed and published by Sega for the PlayStation 2 in 2005 in Japan. A sequel, Yakuza 2, was released in 2007. The franchise has multiple other games, from Yakuza: Like a Dragon to Yakuza 0 prequel and a remake of the original game, titled Yakuza: Kiwami.
