The upcoming Super Mario animated movie sequel (tentatively The Super Mario Bros Movie 2) has revealed an April 24, 2026 release date in Japan. That is almost exactly 3 years after the first movie’s premiere in the country (April 28, 2023). An important note is that the first movie started screening internationally 3 weeks earlier than Japan (April 7, 2023).
As previously announced, the film will be co-produced by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri and Nintendo representative director Shigeru Miyamoto, with Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic directing. Matthew Fogel will be in charge of the screenplay. You can watch the Japanese-dubbed trailer of the first movie below.
The movie is the third feature film adaptation of the popular video game franchise, and the English/Japanese voice cast includes:
- Mario: Chris Pratt / Mamoru Miyano
- Princess Peach: Anya Taylor-Joy / Arisa Shida
- Luigi: Charlie Day / Tasuku Hatanaka
- Bowser: Jack Black / Kenta Miyake
- Toad: Keegan-Michael Key / Tomokazu Seki
- Donkey Kong: Seth Rogen / Koji Takeda
- Cranky Kong: Fred Armisen / Naomi Kusumi
- Kamek: Kevin Michael Richardson / Jin Urayama
- Foreman Spike: Sebastian Maniscalco / Yasuhiro Mamiya
The first movie was a huge hit, and its opening broke the record for the highest earning animated movie opening in history. Prior adaptations for Super Mario were the 1986 anime film Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! and the 1993 live-action film Super Mario Bros.
