The anime is based on the Demon Lord, Retry! (Maou-sama, Retry!) light novels by Kurone Kanzaki. The novel was originally published under Futabasha’s Monster Bunko imprint with illustrations by Koji Ogata. It was moved to M Novels after 3 volumes, with Makoto Iino taking over the illustrations. There is also a manga adaptation with art by Amaru Minotake. J-Novel Club licensed both manga and light novel in English, while Crunchyroll streams the anime.
The story follows Akira Oono as he ends up as the last boss in a video game, which was his favorite character anyway. He begins looking for a way to return to his original world, meeting a bunch of different characters along the way.
