Fate/Zero is a prequel to Type-Moon’s Fate/stay night visual novel, telling the story of the Fourth Holy Grail War. It was written by Gen Urobuchi with illustrations by Takashi Takeuchi. The novel was adapted into a manga with art by Shinjiro, as well as a 25-episode TV anime by ufotable. Both were released through 2011-2012. Urobuchi commented on the Fate/Zero musical adaptation:
“It is a great joy to be able to once again deliver a work from a time when I was driven by a different kind of ambition and passion to the audience. It feels as though I myself have been rejuvenated.

Fate/Zero was a major turning point for me, and it’s no exaggeration to say that the Gen Urobuchi who exists today is thanks to this work. The anticipation of seeing it take on a new form in the Reiwa era makes my heart race.”

Hideyuki Nishimori is best known as the director of the Moriarty: The Patriot musicals. He also commented on the Fate/Zero project:
Fate/Zero is a legendary work. It’s a masterpiece that will likely be spoken of as a classic even hundreds of years from now.
The profound writing of Gen Urobuchi, widely regarded as a genius, is truly ‘literature’ in the deepest sense.
The human drama depicted is as intense as those in works by Shakespeare or Chikamatsu Monzaemon.

To adapt Fate/Zero into a musical is to explore themes such as ‘What is justice?,’ ‘What is a king?,’ ‘The silence of God,’ and ‘The salvation of the world.’ These themes, woven by characters such as Kiritsugu, Saber, and the others who live through the Holy Grail War, will be transformed into melodies and songs, reflecting in harmony the state of the world we live in.

If we are to depict a work described as legendary, we must respond with a legendary stage. With a cast brimming with talent and a knowledgeable staff, our goal is to create a groundbreaking musical that will transcend genre boundaries. I plan to throw everything I have into this challenge, here and now.”
