Director Shingo Natsume’s first original feature-length anime movie, tentatively titled ghost, has been officially announced in collaboration with MADHOUSE. The film is scheduled for release in 2027 and will be animated by MADHOUSE, with original character designs by Natsume Ono and character design by Norifumi Kugai.
This marks a big step in Natsume’s career, following his acclaimed work on series such as One-Punch Man, ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., and The Tatami Time Machine Blues. His original TV anime Sonny Boy drew attention for its unique style and was nominated in the TV category at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The upcoming film ghost will explore the concept of a “ghost” that resides in everyone’s heart, an invisible yet genuine feeling that defies easy expression. At the center of the story is Nike, a solitary and brave girl who resists the absurdities of the world to protect the night sky. The story aims to lyrically depict the emotional state of her inner world as she begins to connect with others.
Commenting on the project, Natsume stated, “With animation, something that could be considered a kind of fiction, I want to create a work that reflects the spirit of our time and pursues a sense of realism.”
To accompany the announcement, a teaser visual has also been released featuring Nike holding a glass sword. The visual will also be exhibited at MIFA (Marché international du film d’animation), the industry market held alongside the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2025 in France. Starting June 10, posters and a pitch session for ghost will be presented at the event.
