He won’t be doing it solo, but Uglymug, Epicfighter anime is bringing the ugly leveling with its Episode 1 preview. This is a story of a “-255 looks” overpowered MC. WHITE FOX is handling the animation, with the anime set to premiere on July 6. Crunchyroll will be streaming the anime as part of its Summer 2025 anime lineup. Episode 1 is titled “The Birth of Gachi-God,” and you can see the preview images and synopsis below.
Shigeru Yoshioka, who is widely acknowledged (including by himself) as “ugly,” becomes an unemployed shut-in after being falsely accused of a crime.
One day, he tries out a method to travel to another world, and a suspicious screen suddenly appears on his PC…?
The main voice cast for the anime includes:
- Junichi Suwabe as Shigeru Yoshioka
- Maaya Uchida as Rizu
- Kento Shiraishi as Seiji
- Konomi Inagaki as Seika
The opening theme is “My Way” by TEMPEST, while the ending theme is “Bandage” by Miyu Kaneko. Both were featured in the main trailer for the anime, which you can watch below.
Uglymug, Epicfighter (Busamen Gachi Faita) is a Japanese web novel by Ryo Hiromatsu, serialized on Shosetsuka ni Naro from February 2015 to October 2022. A light novel version, illustrated by Akira Banpai, was published by Kobunsha in May 2018.
The series received a manga adaptation illustrated by Osamu Kozuki, serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan from November 2017 to December 2020, with six volumes released from April 2018 to February 2021. The manga is available in English on Square Enix’s Manga Up! Global app, which features the following summary:
His looks are -255, touching girls causes him pain, and sexual acts will literally tear him apart. Just what can our ex-salesman Shigeru get in the other world in exchange for such inconveniences…? This is an epic tale of one very ugly, but ridiculously strong man!
A sequel manga, Busamen Gachi Fighter SSS, also by Kozuki, began serialization in in Monthly Big Gangan in December 2024.
