Netflix has officially begun production on the first live-action adaptation of the Gundam franchise, with Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo set to lead the film. The project is directed by Jim Mickle and is currently filming in Queensland, Australia as of April 2026. It is being produced by Legendary Pictures in collaboration with Bandai Namco Filmworks.

Executive producers include Matthew Jenkins alongside longtime Gundam franchise figures Makoto Asanuma and Naohiro Ogata.

Set in a war between Earth and space colonies, the film will follow rival pilots fighting on opposing sides of a long-running conflict. The premise matches the core themes of the Gundam franchise, which has historically focused on war, politics, and the human sacrifices behind large-scale mecha battles.

As previously reported, Sydney Sweeney will officially star in the movie. You can see the full cast below.

The Hollywood live-action movie revealed a teaser visual in February, tentatively titled GUNDAM. Bandai Namco Filmworks, a subsidiary of the Bandai Namco Group, announced back then that it signed a joint investment agreement with Legendary Entertainment (headquartered in California, USA) for the live-action adaptation, which is planned for worldwide release.

In addition to the movie, it was previously also announced that Bandai Namco Filmworks America, LLC would be established on April 1, 2025. The goal is to support the global expansion of the Gundam brand, with the new North American subsidiary set to operate under Bandai Namco Holdings USA Inc. (a 100% subsidiary of Bandai Namco Filmworks). It will focus on expanding licensing efforts and strengthening the franchise’s global market presence.
