Manga Mavericks Books has announced the English release of Brothers of Japan, an early anthology collection from the acclaimed manga creator Taiyo Matsumoto, best known for Ping Pong, Tekkonkinkreet, and Sunny. The title is scheduled to release in February 2027 in both print and digital formats.

The announcement was made during the publisher’s latest Manga Mavericks Monday licensing presentation and marks the first official English release of the collection. Originally published in Japan in 1995 and later reissued in an updated edition in 2010, the upcoming English version will be based on the revised release.

Brothers of Japan collects 11 short stories created during Matsumoto’s twenties. The story follows two brothers who dream of digging a hole all the way to the other side of the world. According to Manga Mavericks Books, it shows the “simplicity and rawness of manga as a storytelling art.”

Along with the announcement, Matsumoto shared a new message addressing English readers:

“I’m very happy that English speakers will now be able to read Brothers of Japan.

As I drew this when I was in my 20s, it contains a lot of my own immaturity, which is embarrassing. But at the same time, it also contains soft and painful expressions that only young people can draw, and I’m fond of it.

I hope you all enjoy it as well.”

Matsumoto has received multiple Eisner Awards and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize throughout his career, with works such as Ping Pong, Tekkonkreet, Sunny, No. 5, and Tokyo These Days.

Brothers of Japan will be released as a 216-page paperback in A5 format, with print and digital editions scheduled for February 2027.
