The feature film adaptation project for Living in a World Without Magic continues to move forward, with new international initiatives announced as the production seeks to expand its global reach and connect directly with anime fans worldwide.
Originally created by illustrator Akiwashi as a graduation project, Living in a World Without Magic began as a seven-minute independently produced animated music video that has exceeded 6.3 million views on YouTube. The short featured Natsuki Hanae and later inspired a novel adaptation written by Mamoru Iwasa and published by KADOKAWA in 2023.
The upcoming feature film will expand on the world introduced in the original short. Set in a society where witches quietly live among ordinary people, the story follows a boy named Haru who encounters a one-eyed witch named Sara and becomes drawn into the forgotten history of witches.
As part of the film’s development, production company KASAGI LABO has launched the Mahoseka Film Club, a limited-time fan initiative running until July 8, 2026. The campaign is designed to bring together fans interested in seeing the project continue as a theatrical anime film while providing a visible measure of community support.
According to KASAGI LABO, participation in the campaign helps demonstrate audience interest as discussions with potential production partners and investors continue. Members of the Mahoseka Film Club receive access to project updates, behind-the-scenes materials, production artwork, development content, and an exclusive digital badge through the AnimeOshi platform.
The project will also be featured at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. On June 24, KASAGI LABO will host an industry panel titled “A New Fan-driven Model For Original Anime.” The session will feature anime producer Masao Maruyama, known as a co-founder of Madhouse and founder of MAPPA and Studio M2, alongside KASAGI LABO Chief Production Officer Tony S. Izumi. The discussion will focus on new approaches to anime production, funding, and global audience engagement.
In addition, Living in a World Without Magic will appear at Anime Expo 2026 in Los Angeles from July 2 to July 5. Attendees will be able to learn more about the film project and KASAGI LABO’s vision for bringing the story to theatrical audiences.
The original short continues to attract new viewers years after its release, while the novel adaptation has over 7,000 copies in circulation.
