The Sword Art Online anime is going to reveal new information about the show’s 10th-anniversary project on May 27, 2022. The franchise will announce the new details in a live stream on Niconico Live Broadcasting, which will begin at 8:00 PM JST.
The official Twitter of the series also announced that presenter Chaki Matsuzawa will appear in the live stream. Matsuzawa previously reported a death game in the real-life commercial of Sword Art Online: Progressive -Aria of a Starless Night-.
In the recently held AnimeJapan on March 27, 2022, Sword Art Online revealed some of the franchise’s 10th-anniversary projects. A trailer that features the projects has also been released:
The project includes:
- SAO Selection – fans can vote for their favorite scenes in the anime.
- The Art of Sword Art Online – an exhibit that showcases the sceneries used in Sword Art Online.
- Sword Art Online: Variant Showdown – A new game for the franchise of Sword Art Online.
- Sword Art Online: Progressive -Aria of a Starless Night Blu-ray/DVD – the Blu-ray/DVD of the most recent Sword Art Online movie will be released.
- Sword Art Online: Progressive -Scherzo of Deep Night – Second movie adaptation of the Sword Art Online: Progressive light novel series.
The type of information about the 10th-anniversary that will come out on May 27 was not specified.

Sword Art Online anime first aired on July 8, 2012. It was followed by season 2 in 2014. The franchise came back in 2017 with the movie Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale. Tomohiko Ito directed all of it. The third season of the anime titled Sword Art Online: Alicization aired from 2018 to 2019. A continuation titled Sword Art Online: Alicization -War of Underworld- also aired from 2019 to 2020. Manabu Ono is the one who directed it. In 2021, a movie titled Sword Art Online: Progressive Aira of a Starless Night- had a theatrical screening. Part 2 of the anime film titled Sword Art Online: Progressive – Scherzo of the Deep Night– will air be screened in the Fall 2022 anime season. Ayako Kono is directing the Progressive movies. A-1 Pictures is in charge of all of the anime project’s animation.
The anime is based on Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online light novel series. ASCII Media Works has been publishing it with abec’s illustrations since 2009, and it currently has 26 volumes. The same author, illustrator, and publisher are also working on the Progressive light novel series. Yen Press licensed the original Sword Art Online light novel series and describes the plot as:
