Netflix Teases Skull Island Animated Series

Netflix teased the upcoming Skull Island animated series, based on the 2017 monster film Kong: Skull Island. According to the Netflix Geeked Week announcement, American animation studio Powerhouse Animation is animating the series. Netflix referred to the series as “anime” in the official post, a common practice for the streaming platform even when no Japanese studios are involved.

Skull Island is the latest animated series for Powerhouse Animation. The studio is currently working on Tomb Raider and Heaven’s Forest. According to a report by Variety, the animation studio added the title to its production list in 2021, the same year it signed a deal with Netflix to produce animated shows for the platform.

Kong: Skull Island is a reboot of the popular King Kong franchise and the second film in MonsterVerse, a multimedia franchise by Legendary Entertainment. It is set in the year 1973 when a team of scientists and Vietnam War soldiers travel to the uncharted Skull Island and meet Kong, a gigantic ape who is the last of his species. The team of scientists and soldiers also encounter in the film other terrifying creatures, including subterranean reptilian creatures and carnivorous birds.
