Urusei Yatsura 2022 episode 1 preview images have been released ahead of anime show’s October 13 premiere (24:55PM, JST). David Productions is animating the series, with Takahiro Kamei credited as the chief director.
Episode 1 will start off with the introduction to high schooler Ataru Moriboshi, who was chosen randomly to play tag with Lum, an alien girl that is part of the Oni tribe. The Onis invaded the Earth, and will decide the fate of the planet through the game of tag between Ataru and Lum. The catch is that if Ataru wins the tag game, she will marry Lum.
Later on, the story progresses with Ataru getting annoyed with Lum as she interrupts calls coming from Shinobu Miyake, Ataru’s real girlfriend by jamming the signal. You can see all the preview images on the official website.
Yasuhiro Kimura and Takahashi Hideya are credited as directors for the Urusei Yatsura 2022 anime. Yuuko Kakihara is doing the series composition, and Naoyuki Asano is on the character designs. The opening song is titled “Aiue” and features Minami and SAKURAmoti. Meanwhile, the ending song is titled “Tokyo Shandy Rendezvous” and features Kaf and Tsumiki.
HIDIVE and Bilibili are streaming the series, describing the plot as:
The lecherous Ataru Moroboshi is unremarkable, yet his extreme bad luck stands out like the horns on an alien’s head. When Earth is attacked by a fleet of Oni alien invaders, Ataru is chosen to represent humanity in a combat with one of them. It’s a stroke of luck for Ataru that the duel is actually a game of tag, and that his opponent is Lum, the daughter of the Oni’s chief, who prioritizes her own pride over winning—as Ataru discovers by taking Lum’s bikini top and thus victory.
Urusei Yatsura is based on the manga by Rumiko Takahashi, and was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday. Prior to the upcoming reboot, it received an anime adaptation from Studio Pierrot (episodes 1-106) and Studio Deen (107-195), which aired from October 1981 to March 1986.
