Spy x Family Episode 16 - Mission Accomplished?

Although Spy x Family episode 16 may not be as grand as the recent action-packed ones, it’s actually a lovely episode revolving around the troubles of our beloved characters. This week we see a hilarious spin on Yor’s cooking and Franky’s dating life. The energies are a wholesome and refreshing change of pace too. I admit that I found myself laughing even over the most random things. (The cactus, for example.) The most surprising part, and somewhat pleasantly redeeming, is how the rude Camila helps Yor in her cooking ordeal.

It turns out that underneath her mean-girl demeanor, Camila is actually a kind and patient woman. It’s funny because, in this episode, she becomes somewhat relatable and likable whenever she gets frustrated with Yor’s suspicious dishes or gets comforted by Dominic. It was also a great moment when she recreated the Briars’ childhood stew.

There are a lot of cooking moments from Yor that made me laugh, but the one at the top of my favorite moments this week is Yuri coming in as a taste-tester! His simultaneous praise and throwing up of his sister’s abominable cooking is hands down, an incredibly comical moment. Not to mention, the death-by-poison knockout that happens right after. (It sort of reminds me of Shion’s cooking from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime where they eventually built poison resistance.)

Another absurd moment in Spy x Family episode 16 is in the second half when Franky asks and somewhat bribes Twilight for help with a girl he wants to ask out. It’s funny to watch their exchanges because Franky goes full-on stalker/informant mode and Twilight actually cares and helps him plan it, not to mention practicing with him as well. How does the disguise even work?

Although things didn’t turn up as he hoped, Franky is kinda… cool. You see, Franky was always a lively side character supporting our main family, but now, he finally had his own moment. I’m especially happy about this. Plus, Franky and Twilight’s jobs make them destined for loneliness, but at least they have their friendship.

Honestly, I thought it would be an assassin/mission kind of episode when it started in a serious tone. Unpacking this episode makes me emotional because I am reminded again of Yor and Yuri’s childhood. For example, Yuri is the way he is because he knows just how much Yor sacrificed in providing a safe home for them. He appreciates everything from his sister because it’s a token of her love, including the purple blob of a dinner.

With the Forgers, Yor says it is to keep the fake marriage/family together and to protect her job, but when she succeeded, you can tell that it is just pure emotions from her. She is happy that through her food, she made both Anya and Loid smile, and that makes her more confident in herself.

All in all, Spy x Family episode 16 is very adorable. Also, the execution from the music to the visuals to the voice acting was amazing! I really do love a good casual episode with the ordinary day-to-day life of our beloved characters. Everyone in the series is finding a bit of happiness or comfort, unknowingly or not, in their own small (secret) ways.

The next episode will air on Saturday, October 29, at 23:00 JST. You can watch it on Crunchyroll, Netflix, Muse Asia, and Bilibili. If you enjoyed the episode, don’t forget to vote in our weekly polls!
