Tengoku Daimakyo: Heavenly Delusion Tops Week 1 Anime Ranking After A Strong Premiere

This season’s surprising gem, Heavenly Delusion (Tengoku Daimakyo), seems to have already gone out of hiding after only its premiere episode, and it topped our week 1 anime ranking poll with over 12% of the votes after previously ranking 18th at the most anticipated anime ranking for the season. Behind it were Loving Yamada at Lv999, a romantic comedy featuring a socially detached gamer, and Hell’s Paradise, an action shonen with supernatural abilities and monsters. In case you still haven’t watched it, the story follows Kiru and Maru, who are trying to find ‘heaven’ in a post-apocalyptic world riddled with monsters. In contrast, there is an isolated school for children who seem to have some higher-than-average abilities, and they are unaware of the outside world. Maru seems to have some connection to the children on the other side, and there are sure to be twists and revelations in the upcoming episodes.

Studio Production I.G is handling the animation, with Hirotaka Mori as the director. Heavenly Delusion (Tengoku Daimakyou) is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Masakazu Ishiguro. Kodansha has been serializing it in its seinen manga magazine Monthly Afternoon since January 2018, and it is still ongoing with 8 compilation volumes as of November 2022. Denpa licensed it in English and they the story as:
Within the safety of the walls, youths are raised in a nursery-style setting by robots. While life there may appear stale on the surface, the children are full of potential and curiosity. In many ways it is like a slice of heaven. The outside world is a hell-scape. It is almost entirely void of anything mechanical and is now inhabited by bizarre, yet powerful super-natural beings.
Maru, with the aid of Kiruko, is out there crisscrossing what was once Tokyo for heaven. But after searching for so long, maybe heaven is more of an untenable dream than a potential reality.

Disney+ and Hulu are streaming the Tengoku Daimakyo anime.
