Girlfriend, Girlfriend Episode 7 is now airing! This time around, Saki and Nagisa do their best to cater to Naoya’s tastes. Meanwhile, Mirika struggles with her feelings for Naoya, and confronts him about them. In this spoiler-filled discussion, let’s look at the episode’s key talking points!
In Girlfriend, Girlfriend Episode 7, Saki faces the fact that she and Naoya haven’t gotten any “action” done. This point is brought up by her mother of all people, who is surprised to learn that the couple haven’t even kissed. This raises some alarm bells in Saki’s head. She becomes concerned about her relationship with Naoya, and decides to take matters into her own hands.
This leads to Saki donning a bunny suit in order to entice her boyfriend. And it certainly seems to work! Of course, this is not only a sight to behold for Naoya. Viewers are treated to some rather gratuitous close-up shots of certain parts of Saki’s outfit. Let’s just say these shots are of the rather excitable variety. It seems that the fanservice never seems to end!
On a plot related note, this point serves to emphasize Naoya’s resolve. He reminds Saki that he promised not to engage in adult activities with her. Ultimately though, the issue at hand reveals itself to be Saki’s self-esteem. When she realizes that Naoya does find her attractive in that way, all her worries are soon quelled.
It’s not exactly anything groundbreaking for the story. Let’s not pretend there was any other reason to have this in other than to see Saki in a bunny suit. But it is a good to have a reminder of who these characters are so they feel more real.
Saki is so happy with Naoya’s response to her bunny suit that she has a major oversight. She leaves the bunny suit in the laundry for Nagisa to discover! Oh no!
This leads to Nagisa trying to one-up Saki by dressing as a maid for Naoya. She and Naoya really get into the whole master-maid act thing. Naoya finds it absolutely adorable, and allows himself to indulge in the dynamic a bit. Eventually, Naoya asks if Nagisa can be his maid once a week, and Nagisa obliges.
So that was kinda weird. There’s an element of cringe in seeing Naoya and Nagisa really get into very specific tastes of theirs. However, it’s blended in with a slight semblance of charm as well. It is rather hilarious to see the girls really go to ridiculous lengths to try and please Naoya.
On another note, there will surely be viewers out there excited to see Nagisa don her maid outfit! Like Naoya said, she does look very adorable in it. So for those of you out there who are into that kind of thing, do enjoy it!
The more emotional part of Girlfriend, Girlfriend Episode 7 revolves around Mirika and her feelings for Naoya. Despite herself, she can’t stop thinking about him and how he stood up to her father. This leads to her confronting Naoya outside his classroom. The two decide to find a spot where they can be alone to talk things out.
As she speaks to Naoya, Mirika marvels at his best qualities. In her head, she revels in just how understanding, compassionate, and kind Naoya is toward her. However, much to her dismay, he remains resolute in saying he cannot have her as a girlfriend. She is so overwhelmed by his kindness toward her that she runs away in a fit.
This leads to Mirika finally accepting that she’s in love with Naoya. She’d been denying it for so long, but standing there, breathless by a staircase, she finally comes to accept the truth. As she does this, she remains unaware of Saki, standing a few feet away, glaring at her.
Mirika’s part in this episode is perhaps the only one that ties into the show’s main story. It builds on the conflict established between her and the trio over the past few episodes. At the beginning, it seemed like it was rather obvious how this element would play out. It seemed absolutely certain that Mirika would become a third girlfriend. However, things aren’t so certain now. And how horrible for Mirika that her feelings for Naoya are becoming stronger by the day too.
Many of us can relate to having feelings for someone that aren’t reciprocated. It’s this that makes Mirika’s dilemma so relatable, and makes this aspect of the episode feel that much more hard-hitting.
While this episode did a solid job of building on the campy, goofy atmosphere Girlfriend, Girlfriend is known for, there are some odd moments it delivered too. It certainly feels like fanservice has been a priority of the show’s recent episodes. It’s to the point that these moments seem to take priority over the main story. For example, less than half of Episode 7 contributes to the overarching story the show is telling.
This may not be too much of a problem for some people. After all, it’s a harem anime. Do people really watch these types of shows for riveting tales and deep lore? Of course not. It’s just beginning to feel like the show is wasting some of the potential it has in favor of fanservice-y moments. And as hilarious as Girlfriend, Girlfriend continues to be, that’s a little bit sad.
