A classic fairy tale is given new life in Brielle and Bear: Volume 1, which imagines “Beauty and the Beast” for contemporary idealists. It centers on Brielle, a bookish romantic, and Bear, whose secret jeopardizes their budding romance. This graphic novel is more than just a romance, it’s an in-depth reflection on vulnerability, self-acceptance, and the messy magic of first love, with its blend of tender moments, emotional challenges, and the timeless search for trust.
A tale as old as time refreshed for modern readers. This Beauty and the Beast retelling captures the magic and romance of first-year university students Brielle and Bear and the fairytale they are destined to live.
Once upon a time, Brielle met Bear. And then they fell in love.
But that’s just the beginning. Fairytales have a way of twisting and swirling before you get to “happily ever after.” And though modern-day Once Upon a Time University first-year, Brielle, is a dreamer, always with her nose in a book, her imagination can’t help but run wild with potential romance.
To her, Bear is perfect. . . until Brielle discovers a secret he’s been hiding for a long time that just might shatter their fairytale love. . . .
Graphic Novel Review: Brielle and Bear
It was refreshing to read this story. Because the characters’ feelings and experiences were so similar to mine, I had no trouble putting myself in their world while reading. They have a close bond, and their interactions keep the story interesting.
Since I enjoy relating stories to my own experiences, especially my first year of university, I found that the first few chapters particularly connected to me. It was simple to become emotionally involved in the main character’s story by following her through her first year. I liked how the writing lets young readers identify with the characters and imagine their own lives.
There was this moment where a character’s expression of discouragement over his dyslexia and reading difficulties was one particularly potent moment. As someone who also has trouble reading, it got me thinking about how people frequently feel limited by circumstances that are beyond their control. This is handled effectively in the story, demonstrating that a person’s value is not determined by such challenges.
The way the characters come to open up to each other is another strength of this story. The story emphasizes the value of vulnerability and trust in relationships, regardless of whether the characters are new to one another or are reuniting with each other.
Brielle and Bear will be available starting April 22nd.

Design Review:
The book’s cover art is adorable, and I adore the illustration style. I can’t say much about that because the interior pages weren’t colored when I received the review copy. Even without the complete visual experience, I was captivated by the story and could easily picture how brightly colored it would appear in color. All things considered, the design exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere that is ideal for the narrative.
