Akane continues to show just how kind, patient, and selfless she can be, even when pushed to her limits in My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 Vol. 6. The fallout from the previous volume’s relationship conflict is addressed, though the pacing feels a bit rushed due to shorter chapters. What really shines here is the growth of new connections, as Akane and Yamada each start building bridges with each other’s friends and family.
Akane’s spirits are dashed when her in-person meeting with Yui goes wrong. Tensions rise when Yui’s boyfriend shows up and sparks a fight, forcing Yamada to step in. But will Yamada be able to comfort Akane in the aftermath of such disappointment? Meanwhile, what will become of their guild in the face of this new conflict?
Manga Review: My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 Vol. 6
In the last volume of My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999, there was a big conflict about relationships that really hit like a slap (literally). I thought things were going really well, but I feel like it was a little too fast. By the time we get to Volume 6, the chapters are getting a little short, so that situation dies down quickly. I would like it to maybe show more growth, because you really see how Akane is such a nice and sweet person, she doesn’t deserve to be this nice to everyone. She tries her best, even when people make her so angry that she would slap them. She tries so hard to keep everything together and be at peace. Personally, I wouldn’t do that. I would hold onto anger. I think not everyone will feel the same way, but some people still have the standard where they can’t really recover for a while.
For her to recover pretty fast and try to make amends with someone is very crazy, but that’s who she is, and that’s what I like about her. She’s someone that I am not, and you just have to accept it, grow, and try to help someone else as well. What I also like about her is that she tries to help people grow, even though they hurt her the most, to the point that she had to get physical in the story.
In My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 Vol. 6, you get to see more interaction with other characters. For example, Akane meets one of Yamada’s friends by chance, and it’s so funny because his friend is trying to be a silly flirt since he’s drunk. Even though it’s their first interaction, she gets to know more about his friends, and you see how he even tries to help Yamada learn about girls’ feelings, like when they say they’re fine but might actually mean something else because they keep their feelings hidden. It’s kind of funny how he himself tries to give tips about relationships even though he’s not in one and struggles too.
Yamada gets to talk to Akane’s brother for the first time on the phone because she wants her brother to have someone to play games with. That’s why I like her. She tries to connect and keep her family happy. Even though they have never met, she is trying her best to make good connections. She sees that her brother wants someone to play with him, and she thinks of her boyfriend because he’s a great gamer and because she knows and trusts him. He will treat her brother well when they play games. Please think of these connections like a tree. This is the start of growing their tree of connections, and that’s what I love about this volume.
Another thing about them as a couple, I like how patient they are with each other. Even though the age gap is pretty small, Yamada is still in high school, and they are trying to be patient because they can’t go very far in the relationship yet. That’s good, they have been waiting a little bit since he’s almost finished with high school. It’s great how they try their best to be as close as a couple. Another thing about this couple is that they are very straightforward about how they want to do things, all the cute stuff. It makes me feel really lonely, but it does feel good.
Big news, remember how there was a girl in Yamada’s class who confessed to him, but he rejected her? Well, the good thing is that she is moving on and hopefully will play games with Akane and the others soon.
I really appreciate how My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 Vol. 6 focuses on connections and how people help each other grow. That said, I wish the conflict had been given more room to develop. There is growth here, but it doesn’t feel as significant or as well-explored as it could have been. Still, I can’t complain too much. I really love how sweet and lovey-dovey the main couple is. Just a heads-up, though: the volume ends on a scary cliffhanger, so be prepared for that.

Design Review:
From the looks of the manga cover, I still wish there were some gaming design elements on the covers, like in the original design. I like the idea of using color. On the rim for the number 6 and on the back, there’s a shape that contains text, and the color of the shape matches Yamada’s outfit. I do wish the color scheme were a little different, because the mix of that color and purple looks kind of weird.
I feel like it could be a bit different. It gives the pop the design needs, but it also throws me off. Still, I like the idea because in the original design, they didn’t have that. They only had the purple text and effects. For this version, they tried to mix things up by matching colors, and I find that very interesting. I do like it, but again I do wish there was a little more of the gaming side, as I have always said for the past five reviews I have done for this series. That said, I do appreciate the use of creativity.
