With the launch of comici MANGA in January 2026, comici Inc. entered the international digital manga space with a different approach. Rather than focusing on single publishers or algorithm-driven feeds, the platform is built around the idea of recreating the traditional manga magazine experience, bringing multiple labels together into a curated, discovery-driven format.
Available across web and mobile with a shared account system, the service combines subscription, free, and rental options while expanding globally across 12 countries. Behind it is comici’s existing infrastructure, already used to power several digital manga platforms in Japan.
We spoke with the comici MANGA CEO, Mr. Daisaku Manda, about how that philosophy translates into a global product, how they approach discovery over a large catalog, and what readers can expect as the platform continues to grow. Read on for the full interview.
Q: comici MANGA launched internationally with the idea of recreating the traditional manga magazine experience in digital form. What does that philosophy mean in practice for readers opening the app for the first time?
A: For us, recreating the manga magazine experience digitally means bringing back the feeling of “encounter.”
In a traditional manga magazine, readers don’t open it for just one title. They discover multiple series at once, often finding something unexpected.
When readers open comici MANGA, we want them to experience that same sense of exploration, not just consuming a single work, but encountering a lineup. It’s less about optimization for one title, and more about recreating a cultural format.
Q: The platform launched with titles from several publishers including Bushiroad Works, Kill Time Communication, Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha, Fusosha, and Ohzora Publishing. How do you decide which publishers and series are the right fit for the platform as it expands?
A: We look for partners who are open to global distribution and who have a diverse catalog that can travel across borders.
At the same time, we focus on balance, strong IPs that can attract users, and niche or emerging works that can grow through discovery.
Our goal is not just to bring existing hits overseas, but to create an environment where new titles can find audiences globally.
Q: Many manga apps outside Japan focus heavily on single publishers or single formats. comici MANGA brings multiple labels together under one platform. What advantages does that give readers compared to other digital manga services?
A: The biggest advantage is variety within a single experience.
Most platforms are optimized around one publisher or one format, which limits discovery. By bringing multiple labels together, readers can explore different styles, genres, and storytelling approaches in one place.
This is closer to how manga has historically been consumed in Japan, as a curated ecosystem, not a single-channel experience.
Q: One of the challenges with large digital catalogs is discovery. How does comici MANGA help readers find new series they might never have tried otherwise?
A: Discovery is one of the biggest challenges, and also one of our core focuses.
We approach this in two ways.
First, through editorial curation, presenting titles as part of a lineup rather than isolated content.
Second, through data, understanding reading behavior across multiple publishers to surface works that resonate with specific audiences.
We believe discovery is where data and editorial intuition should work together.
Q: Your platform launched simultaneously in 12 countries. Did you notice any differences in reading habits or genre preferences between regions during the early launch period?
A: Yes, we are already seeing clear differences.
BL performs strongly across multiple regions, while some genres show more regional variation. For example, certain narrative styles or pacing resonate differently depending on the market.
However, one key insight is that niche genres from Japan can scale globally when properly distributed. That reinforces our belief that the opportunity lies not just in mainstream hits, but in connecting the right content to the right audience.
Q: The service already includes well-known titles like The Ancient Magus’ Bride alongside newly released English-language works. How important is it for comici MANGA to balance recognizable series with new discoveries?
A: This balance is critical.
Well-known titles help users trust the platform and lower the barrier to entry. But long-term engagement comes from discovery, finding something new that resonates personally.
We see these two as complementary. Recognizable works bring users in, and new discoveries make them stay.
Q: comici has experience building manga platforms in Japan through its infrastructure and management system used by several publisher sites. How did that experience influence the design of the international version of comici MANGA?
A: Our experience in Japan shaped this significantly.
We’ve worked with multiple publishers, building platforms that combine content management, analytics, and operations. Through that, we learned that distribution alone is not enough. Understanding user behavior and supporting editorial decisions is equally important.
That’s why comici MANGA is not just a reader app, but part of a broader infrastructure that connects content, data, and operations.
Q: Looking ahead to the rest of 2026, what is the biggest change or addition readers can expect as the platform continues to grow?
A: The biggest focus for us in 2026 is expanding our catalog and improving the user experience.
First, we are actively increasing the number of titles on the platform, especially in genres that have shown strong global demand. We believe that the breadth of content is essential to recreate the true manga magazine experience.
Second, we are continuously improving the product experience, making it easier for readers to discover, follow, and engage with multiple series.
As we grow, our goal is simple: more content, and a better experience to enjoy it.
With comici MANGA, the company is attempting to bring the distinct Japanese way of reading manga to a global audience. By combining multiple publishers, editorial curation, and data-driven discovery, the platform aims to be more than a standard digital storefront, focusing on recreating the experience of a manga magazine in a digital format.
As the catalog expands and the service continues to evolve through 2026, the success of that approach will likely depend on how well comici can balance familiar titles with new ones, while keeping the sense of exploration that defines its core concept.
We would like to thank comici and Mr. Daisaku Manda for taking the time to answer our questions and share their insights on the platform. You can check comici MANGA on its official website.
