The game is set in the medieval fantasy kingdom of Euchronia. The story begins with the assassination of King Hythlodaeus V, leading to political turmoil and a quest to find his successor. Players follow Will, an orphan from the magic-wielding Elda tribe, on a journey to lift a curse placed on his childhood friend, the prince of Euchronia.

Upon release, the game received acclaim for its narrative, world-building, and gameplay mechanics, achieving one million copies sold on launch day. It was also nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024, where it won the awards for Best Narrative, Best Art Direction and Best Role Playing Game.

The Metaphor: ReFantazio manga presents a more comedic take on the story. Will is shown as more expressive and less formal than in the game. Some plot points, such as the king’s funeral, also occur earlier in the manga, which streamlines the story.
