My Dress-Up Darling is getting a TV drama adaptation starting in October, starring Riko Nagase as Marin Kitagawa and Koto Nomura as Wakana Gojo. The play will air starting on October 8 in the “Dramaism” time slot on MBS and TBS. A photo featuring the two was revealed.
The TV drama adaptation will be directed by Koji Shintoku, with Satoko Okazaki in charge of the screenplay. Kyodo Television is the production company. Both of the lead actors left comments on their roles:
Riko Nagase (Marin): “I’m Riko Nagase, playing the role of Marin Kitagawa. When I first read the original work, I was struck by how straightforward Wakana is and how charming Marin is as a character. When I met with the director, they mentioned that they wanted to carefully portray the distance between these two characters. Even though they seem like complete opposites, they share some similarities, and I want to carefully depict how they change through cosplay. While Marin appears flashy, she has a delicate heart, and I’m looking forward to enjoying the filming while portraying this wonderful character. The cosplay hair, makeup, and costumes are very vibrant, so please look forward to the broadcast!”
Koto Nomura (Wakana): “I’m Kota Nomura, and I’ll be playing the role of Wakana Gojo. In the original work, Marin is bright, free-spirited, and true to herself, while Wakana is shy, serious, and pure, but incredibly earnest. The contrast between these two, who are so different in personality but equally passionate about what they love, is incredibly cute and heartwarming, and it really made my heart flutter. I also came to appreciate the importance of acknowledging and embracing what you love. I hope that the drama My Dress-Up Darling will become a wonderful piece of work for everyone, and I would be delighted if you could watch over it warmly!”
My Dress-Up Darling is a Japanese manga series written and drawn by Shinichi Fukuda. Square Enix is publishing it in both Japanese and English. The series received an anime adaptation by CloverWorks in Winter 2022. A sequel was announced in September of the same year, with no details revealed so far. Crunchyroll describes the story:
A loner boy and a flashy girl find common ground via cosplay in this sweet and spicy romcom!
Wakana Gojo is a high school boy who wants to become a kashirashi–a master craftsman who makes traditional Japanese Hina dolls. Though he’s gung-ho about the craft, he knows nothing about the latest trends, and has a hard time fitting in with his class. The popular kids–especially one girl, Marin Kitagawa–seem like they live in a completely different world. That all changes one day, when she shares an unexpected secret with him, and their completely different worlds collide.
