Singer Ichiro Mizuki Passes Away at 74

Singer Ichiro Mizuki passed away on December 6, 2022, his agency Yellow Bird announced on Monday. He was diagnosed with the lung cancer in April 2021 and he was undergoing treatment.

The agency’s statement says Ichiro Mizuki passed away at 6:50 pm on December 6, 2022 due to the cancer. He had been fighting against the illness with radiation therapy or pharmacotherapy for the past year and seven months, but he took his last breath on the day at the hospital, to which he was taken by ambulance. Despite of his suffering brain metastases, lymph node metastasis, and meningeal dissemination, he had been pursuing his goal to “never retire” and has remained active with treatment and rehabilitation. On a stage held on November 27, which became his last stage, he had a smile on his face. His funeral was held by his close relatives.

Ichiro Mizuki was born on January 7, 1948. He was called “Aniki” among his fans, and was also known as “the Emperor of the Anime Song World”. His well-known songs are Mazinger Z anime’s opening theme song titled “Mazinger Z” and more. The singer made the anime song debut with Genshi Shonen Ryu anime with its opening theme song “Genshi Shonen Ryu ga Iku” in 1971. In recent years, Mizuki performed opening and ending theme songs “Chojin Joshi Senshi Garibenger V” and “Hadashi no Sunahama” respectively, for Virtual YouTuber Shiro and comedian Eiji Kotoge’s Chojin Joshi Senshi Garibenger V. To commemorate his 50th anniversary of his career as an anime song singer, an album CD titled “Mizuki Ichiro AniSon Debut 50 Shu-nen Kinen BEST” (tentative) is scheduled to be released on January 18, 2023.
