The World’s Strongest Rearguard Anime Director Yuji Yanase Dies at 59

Anime director Yuji Yanase, who directed the currently airing The World’s Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker and The Insipid Prince’s Furtive Grab for the Throne, died on August 22, 2026. He was 59 years old.

The anime’s production committee announced Yanase’s passing on September 2, expressing its condolences and reflecting on his contributions to the series.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden news of his passing. Director Yanase devoted tremendous effort to the production of The World’s Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker, leading the production team with his passion and warm personality. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and offer our deepest condolences.”

MAHO FILM, where Yanase was employed, separately announced that the director died of a myocardial infarction on August 22. According to the studio, his funeral was held privately with close relatives in accordance with his family’s wishes. MAHO FILM also thanked fans and others who supported Yanase during his lifetime.

Yanase had worked as an anime director on numerous productions. His directing credits include By the Grace of the Gods, In the Land of Leadale, If It’s for My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord, and In Another World with My Smartphone, among other titles.

His latest project, The World’s Strongest Rearguard: Labyrinth Country’s Novice Seeker, is currently ongoing. The fantasy series follows Arihito, who is reincarnated in the Labyrinth Country and takes on the support-focused “Rearguard” class, capable of assisting his party through attack, defense and recovery abilities.

The production committee has not announced any changes to the anime’s broadcast or production schedule in its statement.
