Though I Am an Inept Villainess Franchise Details
Satsuki Nakamura self-published Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website in July 2020. Ichijinsha acquired the publishing rights to the story in 2020. They released the story as a light novel with illustrations by Kana Yuki through their light novel label, Ichijin Novels. The same year, Ei Ohitsuji adapted the light novel into a Monthly Comic Zero Sum manga. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes both the manga and light novels in English.
Doga Kobo adapted the light novel into a 2026 summer anime. Crunchyroll simulcasts the series. Netflix, Bilibili Asia, and Disney+ also stream the series in select territories.
Though I Am an Inept Villainess follows Kou Reirin, a sickly maiden who’s destined to be her kingdom’s queen consort. Or that’s how things seem. Unfortunately for Kou-chan, one of her court’s other maidens, Shu Keigetsu, envied her so much that she used forbidden magic to transfer their souls. Now stuck in Shu’s body, Kou finds herself unable to speak of what’s happened. But it really doesn’t matter, after all; Kou’s new body is physically fit and allows her to do all the things she couldn’t before. All the horrible things that come with being Shu don’t compare to the joys of her new body!
