WIT Studio’s Moonrise anime finally has a release date, and the anime will begin streaming on Netflix on April 10. Chiaki Kobayashi and Yuto Uemura will lead the voice cast, with an original theme song by AiNA THE END. You can see some new images for the anime below.
The story is written by novelist and screenwriter Tou Ubukata. Manga artist Hiromu Arakawa, (Fullmetal Alchemist, Silver Spoon) is the character designer, while Masashi Koizuka (Attack on Titan Seasons 2 and 3) is the director. Comments from the director and the two main voice actors can be seen below.
Director Masashi Koizuka:
This is WIT STUDIO’s first attempt at creating a space opera. It’s also the first time we’ve collaborated with Netflix on an original project. The production process has been filled with excitement and, at times, madness. Even after reviewing the completed footage multiple times, I am in awe of how the cast poured their passion into their performances, and how our animation team elevated the visuals far beyond our initial expectations. I hope viewers will enjoy this synergy.
Chiaki Kobayashi (Jacob “Jack” Shadow):
I’m Chiaki Kobayashi, and I have the honor of voicing Jack in Moonrise. It’s an incredible privilege to work alongside such talented and respected creators. As an original anime, much of the story remains shrouded in mystery, but one thing is certain—the action is absolutely breathtaking, filled with incredible speed and intensity. To match this powerful animation, we, the cast, have put our entire hearts and souls into our performances, screaming and fighting with everything we’ve got. I hope you can feel that energy when you watch Moonrise! Moonrise!!
Yuto Uemura (Phil Asch):
Moonrise was recorded over an extended period, and the tension that arose from our dialogue exchanges made for an exhilarating recording environment. I have been eagerly awaiting the moment we could finally share this project with the world, so I’m truly excited. The anime features intense battle sequences, and Phil is a character who struggles within this chaotic conflict. He moves forward, driven by his strong convictions and ambitions. I approached this role with everything I had, so I encourage you to pay close attention to the inner struggles of each character. Please look forward to it!
Moonrise was announced back in June 2022, and WIT Studio president and CEO George Wada then described the concept:
Moonrise takes place in the near future and will be set in both the Moon and on Earth. WIT STUDIO will join forces with Mr. Ubukata, who is known for the popular series of Mardock Scramble (Winner of the Nihon SF Taisho Award) and the historical novel The Universe Revealed (Winner of the Booksellers Award).
Moonrise will portray the lives of two men, Jack and Al, as they confront various hardships in the vast world of outer space. All action and scenery in the unexplored parts of the Moon will be illustrated using an innovative type of animation unlike any seen before. My sincere wish is that this project inspires contemporary lives everywhere.
