Full-Length "Shikairo Days" Music Video Promises Top-Notch Brain Rot

The most non-nonsensical show of the season ended this week, but it left us with one hell of a reminder. To commemorate the conclusion of the My Deer Friend Nokotan anime, the Twin Engine YouTube channel released a music video for the full-length “Shikairo Days” opening theme song, sung by the main cast. Featuring animation and scenes from the anime, the MV lives up to the show’s utter randomness.

“Shikairo Days” teaser was to the anime world what space walks are to world media outlets; the main topic of discussion for days on end. With hooks and a promo video that’s catchier than the plague, it took the song little time to reach #1 on iTunes Japan and surpass the 1 million view mark on YouTube. And with lyrics as profound as “Reindeer are elk, and antelope are cows,” is it any surprise?

Yuxuki Waga and Hitoshi Harukawa arranged and composed the song under the supervision of Masamitsu Fujimori, who served as the show’s music editor. “Shikairo Days” was performed by Shika-bu (The Deer Club), which comprises the show’s main voice cast:

  • Megumi Han as Noko Shikanoko
  • Saki Fujita as Torako Koshi
  • Rui Tanabe as Anko Koshi
  • Fuuka Izumi as Meme Bashame

WIT Studio, known for Attack on Titan, The Ancient Magus Bride, and Vinland Saga, animated My Deer Friend Nokotan under the direction of Masahiko Oota. The voice cast also features:

  • Rio Tsuchiya as Kinu Tanukikouji
  • Chinatsu Akasaki as Chiharu Tsubameya
  • Yurika Kubo as Neko Nekoyamada
  • Kikuko Inoue as Ukai Sensei
  • Kousuke Toriumi as the Narrator

Telling the story of Torako “Koshitan” Koshi, My Deer Friend Nokotan shows us that any fight against nature is a fight we’ll lose. One day when Koshitan, a former delinquent and current honor roll/student council president, walks to school, her life takes a turn for the odd. To her disbelief, a deer/human hybrid is hanging from the telephone poles and asking for her help. At first, she attempts to ignore the high strangeness creeping into her life, but her conscience compels her to lend a helping hand. Unfortunately for her, that act of kindness immediately backfires as the deer/human hybrid she saves seems hell-bent on calling out her sordid past. Are Koshitan’s peaceful days behind her? Check out My Deer Friend Nokotan on Crunchyroll to find out.
