Female Anime Characters on Iranian TV to Wear Hijab

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ruled that female anime characters on Iranian TV must now wear a hijab. Unfortunately, it also includes anime. Khamenei said that women in cartoons and anime don’t need to cover their hair. However, female anime/cartoon characters need to wear a hijab because of the consequences of not wearing one. Iran’s Supreme Leader got a question whether he thought it was ‘necessary to observe hijab for the characters of animated films’. His response was: ‘Although wearing hijab in such a hypothetical situation is not required per se, observing hijab in animation is required due to the consequences of not wearing hijab’.

One of the Iranian journalists and activists, Masih Alinejad, mocked the decision and posted the following statement on Twitter:

It’s not the first time that Iran forced strict censorship laws on the country’s film industry. For example, physical interactions between men and women banned (in films). A lot of people aren’t happy with this situation and are saying it’s absurd to censor anime and cartoons in that way.
