Riko Fukumoto will voice the protagonist in the new Pokémon anime by studio CoMix Wave Films titled Kairyu to Yubinyasan (Dragonite and the Mail Carrier). The anime was announced last week, and it is set to release on Pokémon’s official YouTube channel on February 27, which is celebrated as Pokémon Day.
The story follows Hana, a young girl who dreams of becoming a mail carrier like Dragonite. One day, she discovers an unaddressed letter and sets out to find its sender. With her partner Fuecoco, she rushes through the city and eventually finds the sender, a boy named Rio. He reveals that the letter was meant to celebrate his father’s birthday, but his father is away working alone in the Kanto region, and today is the big day.
Regarding her new role, Fukumoto said that, since Hana is 12 years old, she made sure to emphasize a childlike innocence and enthusiasm. Talking more about the Dragonite and the Mail Carrier anime, she said she was most excited seeing how different Pokémon help out in the post office with their unique abilities. “There’s also a scene where Hana flies on Dragonite, soaring over various regions, where Pokémon from different locations make appearances—it’s really fun to watch!”
The studio animating is CoMix Wave Films, a studio best known for animating Makoto Shinkai’s works such as Your Name., Weathering With You, and Suzume. Dragonite and the Mailman will be themed around a “memorable day.” Serving as director will be Taku Kimura from Studio Lemon. The full staff includes:
