The original Princess Principal TV anime was produced collaboratively by Studio 3Hz and Actas. The series, directed by Masaki Tachibana and scripted by Ichiro Okochi, ran for a total of 12 episodes from July 9 to September 24, 2017. Set in an alternate 20th-century England, the story follows five girls attending the prestigious Queen’s Mayfaire school who double as undercover spies for the Commonwealth, aiming to overthrow the Kingdom of Albion.
The six-part sequel movie project Princess Principal: Crown Handler was announced in 2018, intended to continue where the TV anime left off. The first chapter was initially scheduled for April 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, premiering on February 11, 2021 instead. The second chapter followed on September 23, 2021. The third chapter was released on April 7, 2023.
