This month’s issue of Monthly Afternoon was released without a new chapter of Vinland Saga, with series creator Makoto Yukimura apologizing for the unexpected hiatus. The author took to social media to explain the absence, clarifying that he is healthy and that he will keep doing his best. His full post on X reads:
“I sincerely apologize, in today’s issue of Monthly Afternoon, Vinland Saga is on hiatus. I’m truly sorry, especially since it was so close to being finished. It’s not due to any health issues; I’m in good health. If anything… it might be a ‘lack of talent,’ so to speak. I’m struggling. But I’ll keep doing my best.”
In a recent interview with Anime Corner, Yukimura spoke about his creative approach, the story’s origins, and the values that shape its characters. He also reflected on the iconic line “I have no enemies,” and the hopeful message he hopes the series will leave behind as there are only “a few more” chapters left.

While no formal return date has been announced, the next chapter is expected to appear in the following issue of Monthly Afternoon, barring any additional delays.
Vinland Saga is a critically acclaimed Japanese manga series created by Makoto Yukimura. Originally starting in Weekly Shonen Magazine, the series later transitioned to Monthly Afternoon. Published by Kodansha, Vinland Saga has been serialized since 2005 and, as of June 2024, has been compiled into 28 collected volumes.
The manga has also been adapted into an anime. The first season, produced by WIT Studio, aired in 2019. A second season followed in 2023 under the same core staff at studio MAPPA, continuing the story with a shift in tone that reflected Thorfinn’s evolution. Both Crunchyroll and Netflix are streaming the anime, with the former describing the story:
Around the end of the millennium, Viking, the mightiest but atrocious tribe, had been out breaking everywhere. Thorfinn, the son of the greatest warrior, lived his childhood in the battlefield. He was seeking the land of reverie called Vinland. This is the story of a true warrior in an age of turmoil.
