What does it take to stop a being with world-ending powers? Most fantasy novels would solve this conundrum with an ancient legend, a sacred weapon of some sort, and a band of overpowered heroes. Clevatess, however, does things differently. This new fantasy series quickly destroyed the usual trope and established a new kind of hook, all in the span of the 45-min premiere. And it asks a strange question: what happens when a a being of immense, world-shattering power is handed a baby?
The premiere started in a very bloody fashion, where after a short introduction of the world and Alicia, one of the main characters and one of humanity’s chosen heroes, we immediately jump into a one-sided massacre of said heroes by the beast called Clevatess. As not enough blood was yet shed during the first few minutes of this episode, Clevatess decided to retaliate by razing the city that organized the attack on him to the ground, and contemplated completely eliminating all humanoids at the same time to avoid any future attempts at rebellion.
It is during that contemplation that a dying mother tried to save her baby by entrusting it to the beast that was actively destroying the city. A very temerarious decision, given the situation, but one that possibly saved humanity, as the beast decided to take the baby and observe it before deciding on whether to destroy humanity or not. This signals the true start of the story, as it becomes clear that Clevatess is also going to be one of the main characters of the story.
After the strong opening act, the second half of the 45-minutes first episode starts setting up the rest of the story by showcasing the clumsiness of Clevatess towards the baby entrusted to him, as well as the relationship with Alicia who had been revived as Clevatess’s minion. This story is set up to focus on the relationship of the trio, as well as the character evolution of the Demon Lord who seems to be mingling with humans for the first time, and has no ideas how to take care of a baby nor how to interact with human society.
The setting is reminiscent of Sacrificial Princess & the King of Beasts and The Ancient Magus Bride, which happen to be two of my favorite shows and also showcase a blooming relationship between a “beast” and a human, and the character development that ensues on both sides. Will Clevatess be just as good? We will see, but if you enjoyed one of these two animes, or if you simply like fantasy stories, Clevatess is definitely worth keeping an eye on!
The Clevatess anime premieres on July 2, and you can watch it on Crunchyroll. The story is described by Crunchyroll as:
One of the Lords of Dark Beasts, Clevatess’s reign shatters when he revives a hero he personally slayed and adopts an orphaned humanoid baby—the last hope to save a dying world. Now bound together, what fate awaits this unlikely trio?
