When asked why WIT Studio was remaking One Piece even though it’s ongoing, Wada said he was spurred to do so because One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda lamented that the series was long and newer generations wouldn’t feel the same excitement for the older series. While praising the manga and Toei’s anime, Wada referenced the series’s past, outdated animation techniques & tempo—adding that this has changed nowadays—and WIT’s version would take a modern approach.

Wada adds that the tempo will be faster and will take advantage of its late-night timeslot. (One Piece originally aired in a children’s timeslot.) They also aim to surpass fans’ image of One Piece that has accumulated over the years, and this is a major challenge and pressure. Oda’s vision is at the center of the new anime adaptation, Wada says.

There were concerns among fans with the early marketing of the remake’s “modern animation techniques,” with some worried this included AI. (WIT Studio previously also released an anime using AI-generated art through Netflix.) In this interview, Wada described AI as a threat to WIT, with legal and various other issues to be resolved. He says WIT and Production I.G were taking a wait-and-see approach with its impacts on the industry. The rest of the interview explores anime and WIT’s intersection with Saudi Arabia’s fandom and creators, with Wada touching on Attack on Titan‘s global success.
