Illustrator neco’s original multimedia project Heavy Armored High School Girls is officially getting a TV anime adaptation, with the premiere set for 2027. The adaptation marks the franchise’s first animated project.

Originally launched as a series of illustrations based on the concept of “armed girls × high school students,” Heavy Armored High School Girls has released numerous figure releases and collaborations, with a big following both in Japan and overseas.

The anime will be directed by Masaki Tachibana, known for his work on Princess Principal and episodes of Star Wars: Visions Volume 3. Series composition is being handled by Natsuko Takahashi (Yuyushiki, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0), while the production is a joint effort between Good Smile Film and Good Smile Company.

According to comments released with the announcement, neco has been actively involved in the adaptation process, working closely with the staff:

“For an illustrator, having your own work become an anime is one of the greatest joys imaginable,” neco said. “Heavy Armored High School Girls started as a single illustration and has grown into figures and now an anime. I hope everyone looks forward to it.”

The anime adaptation was announced with a teaser trailer and a new visual drawn by neco. Both the illustration and teaser trailer feature the series’ main character Ichi.

Director Masayuki Tachibana revealed that he worked closely with neco while developing the anime’s story and characters. According to Tachibana, many of the characters’ personalities were shaped through discussions with the original creator, exploring how each girl might behave beyond their visual designs.

He also noted that hearing the cast’s performances during recording led to new discoveries about the characters, suggesting voice production is already underway despite the series’ 2027 release window.

Series composer Natsuko Takahashi said she was immediately drawn to neco’s designs and the contrast at the heart of the project: girls carrying the burden of powerful weaponry while still living as ordinary high school students. She added that extensive discussions with neco, Tachibana, and the production staff helped shape the adaptation, expressing particular appreciation for the team’s ideas throughout development.
