Following the premiere of Re:ZERO Season 4 Part 1’s finale, director Masahiro Shinohara shared his thoughts about the return of the iconic song “Stay Alive”. Posting to X (formerly Twitter), he said:
“While I was pondering what to do about the ending song for Episode 77, music producer Chabata-san [Marina Chabata] suggested, ‘How about Stay Alive?’ Up until just before that, I’d decided to go with ‘STYX HELIX,’ so it was a really appreciated idea.” Chabata joined the series in the third season of the anime.
Performed by Emilia’s voice actor, Rie Takahashi, “Stay Alive” was the anime’s second main ending theme song and has featured in multiple significant points within the series, including:
- When Subaru and Emilia’s relationship broke down in Season 1, after the pair and Rem went to the capital to get Subaru’s gate fixed.
- When Subaru was surrounded by Petelgeuse and the Witch Cult after Emilia’s death, caused by the restriction on Return by Death turning on her instead.
- When Ferris and Julius end Subaru’s life after Petelgeuse takes over his body.
