The upcoming Ooku: The Inner Chambers anime is premiering on June 29 exclusively on Netflix. As part of the announcement, a key visual and a trailer have been released.

Studio Deen is animating the series under the direction of Noriyuki Abe. Rika Takasugi is working on the series composition, while Yoko Sato is doing the character designs. The cast for the anime includes:

Ooku The Inner Chambers anime – Key Visual

The Ooku: The Inner Chambers anime was first announced during the AnimeJapan 2023 event. It is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Fumi Yoshinaga. The manga was serialized in Hakusensha’s manga magazine Melody from June 2004 to December 2020. It also sprang two live-action films in 2010 and 2012 and two 10-episode Japanese television drama series in 2012 and this year.

Viz Media has licensed the manga in English, describing the plot as:
In Edo period Japan, a strange new disease called the Redface Pox has begun to prey on the country’s men. Within eighty years of the first outbreak, the male population has fallen by 75 percent. Women have taken on all the roles traditionally granted to men, even that of the shogun. The men, precious providers of life, are carefully protected. And the most beautiful of the men are sent to serve in the shogun’s Inner Chamber…
