Aniplex Teases Release of Chinese Donghua Dragon Raja (Long Zu)

Aniplex is teasing a new project announcement, seemingly related to the Dragon Raja (Long Zu) donghua. Aniplex recently posted a link to a live stream via its official YouTube channel, teasing, “You have been selected as a recommended student. Please accept your invitation.” The live stream then links to the Aniplex site, which teases the synopsis of this unnamed anime. The stream premieres on January 26 at 6:00 pm JST / 1:00 am PST with the formal announcement at midnight on January 27 (JST). The new teaser synopsis and a screenshot of the live stream can be viewed below:

Temporary number: A.D.0013
You have been selected as a recommended student. As a result of a rigorous selection process, your talent has been recognized, and you have been chosen as a recommended student at our academy. Learning at our academy will be a chance for you to discover the ‘truth
hidden within yourself and in this mundane world. Why not take the first step and join us? We are waiting for you here on Saturday, January 27th at 0:00.

The above image from Aniplex’s live stream appears to be an identical frame from the Dragon Raja donghua, as some Twitter/X users were quick to point out:

The teaser synopsis also corresponds to the Dragon Raja synopsis (per IMDb):
An ordinary high school student, Lu Mingfei, one day received an admission letter from Kassel College, a foreign private university. After hesitating and hesitating, Lu Mingfei decided to find out.

This would confirm reports from 2023 that Dragon Raja producer Tencent and Aniplex had reached a deal to distribute the anime worldwide. Aniplex continues its work in distributing Chinese anime internationally, with the popular Heaven Official’s Blessing (produced by Bilibili) getting a Japanese dub starting on January 7, 2024. Dragon Raja joins other recent Aniplex announcements, including Monogatari’s Off Season and Monster Season. Given the mixed reception to Dragon Raja in China, this may be more than just a worldwide distribution, given that the release of the second season has stalled since its announcement in late 2022.

Dragon Raja adapts the bestselling novels of the same name by Chinese author Jiang Nan, first released in 2010. The first season of the donghua series by studio Garden Culture first debuted in August 2022, with music composed by Kohta Yamamoto, with the opening song featuring a strong pairing of composer Hiroyuki Sawano and director Shingo Yamashita.
