Spin Master Entertainment president Jennifer Dodge teases that the Bakugan live-action will appeal to fans entering adulthood, saying, “Bakugan is a global franchise with a multi-generational and devoted fanbase, built on the strength of its compelling characters and explosive battles. As fans who were part of its initial craze now enter adulthood, we are thrilled to be working with accomplished filmmaking talent like Brad to reimagine Bakugan in live action, expanding the franchise for fans while introducing it to new audiences around the world.“
The plot and tone of the upcoming Bakugan live-action film are unknown. Nevertheless, apocalyptic and disaster themes are commonplace in Peyton’s past directorial credits, which include San Andreas, Rampage, Daybreak, and Atlas, which premiered on Netflix in 2024.
Bakugan (literally meaning “exploding sphere”) is a billion-dollar-plus media franchise, whose lore involves creatures from another universe who encountered humans through mysterious cards. This served as the basis for the massively popular game, where spherical toys would open into intricate monster forms upon contact with magnetic cards.
The first mainline anime series premiered in Japan in 2007 and was a co-production between Canadian company Nelvana Ltd. and Japanese companies TMS Entertainment and Dentsu. It ran for four seasons before a reboot premiered involving Spin Master launched in 2018, followed by another in 2023.
