Blue Giant Movie Heads to Netflix This September

Blue Giant anime movie will be streaming on Netflix in North America (US and Canada) starting on September 1. The movie, animated by studio NUT and directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa, premiered in 2023. GKIDS released the Blu-ray version earlier this year.

Yuichi Takahashi did the character designs, while NUMBER 8 was in charge of the script. Hiromi Uehara composed the music. This was the studio’s first standalone movie (in 2019 they animated the Saga of Tanya the Evil Movie). In an interview with Anime Corner, Director Tachikawa encouraged fans to try and watch the Blue Giant movie with the best sound possible, to get the full experience.

Blue Giant follows the story of Dai Miyamoto, who discovers jazz and realizes that he has found his true calling. He moves to Tokyo to work on his career. There, he meets Yukinori Sawabe who shares a similar passion. The two team up with Dai’s high school friend Shunji Tamada and form a band, named JASS. The cast includes:

  • Yuki Yamada as Dai Miyamoto
  • Shotaro Mamiya as Yukinori Sawabe
  • Amane Okayama as Shunji Tamada

The movie is based on the Blue Giant manga by Shinichi Ishizuka, serialized from 2013 to 2016 in Shogakukan’s Big Comic magazine. The original manga is 10 volumes long and was followed by multiple sequels: Blue Giant Supreme (11 volumes; 2016-2020), Blue Giant Explorer (9 volumes; 2020-2023), and the currently ongoing Blue Giant Momentum. The series has won the Shogakukan Manga Award and the Japan Media Arts Festival Grand Prize. Seven Seas published the manga (without the sequels) in English.
