Eat-Man Announces New Anime Project After Nearly 30 Years

EAT-MAN has officially announced a new anime project subtitled The Over Order, coming nearly 30 years since the last installment in 1998. This was confirmed to be the mysterious teaser from last week, when a video featuring screws was released.

EAT-MAN is a sci-fi manga created by Akihito Yoshitomi, following Bolt Crank, an enigmatic “explorer” who works as a mercenary while traveling from place to place. Bolt has an unusual ability that allows him to consume virtually any object, including screws, metal and weapons, and then reproduce them as weapons.

Yoshitomi launched EAT-MAN in MediaWorks’ Dengeki Comic Gao! in 1996. The manga continued until 2003 and was collected in 19 volumes. The series later returned more than a decade after its original conclusion with EAT-MAN: The Main Dish, which began serialization in Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Sirius in May 2014. That sequel ran until June 2019 and was collected in six volumes. Kodansha also rereleased the original manga in a 10-volume Complete Edition beginning in 2014.

The manga previously received two TV anime adaptations from Studio DEEN. The first EAT-MAN aired on TV Tokyo from January to March 1997 for 12 episodes, while a second 12-episode series, EAT-MAN ’98, followed from October to December 1998. Crunchyroll currently streams the original anime adaptation, describing the story:
Bolt Crank is an “explorer”–a mercenary who only accepts jobs that fits his moral standards. Even so, explorers like him are rarely trusted, and employment both in getting and also doing the job is hazardous. However, despite the fact Bolt says it’s the only job he’s any good at, he’s also the best explorer around. Moreover, he has a unique ability. He’s able to eat anything at all, and later can reproduce it wholly intact and functional! As an enigmatic man of few words, it’s hard to understand someone who can do something so strange, and who despite it all, just wants to be normal.
