Folio Society Releases First Illustrated Edition of Haruki Murakami's 1Q84

The Folio Society has announced the first illustrated edition of Haruki Murakami’s 1Q84. The two-volume set was released on September 16, 2025, featuring new artwork by Colombian illustrator Daniel Liévano.

The edition includes twelve full-colour illustrations, five of them double-page spreads, and more than sixty motifs integrated into the text. Both volumes are bound in purple cloth and housed in a slipcase finished with metallic foil and a die-cut moon design. Multi-foil blocking is used on the bindings to depict scenes from the novel, while the endpapers feature two distinct illustrations. The 1,000-plus page novel will be printed in two colours, with purple and orange accents throughout.

Anime Corner also has the exclusive opportunity to show some interior artwork from the book, which you can check out below.

Murakami’s novel was first published in Japan between 2009 and 2010 and is often described as his magnum opus. Set in Tokyo during 1984, the story follows Aomame and Tengo as they navigate a strange parallel reality where two moons hang in the sky and a cult exerts a sinister influence. Part love story and part thriller, the book blends surrealism with mystery in Murakami’s signature style.

Liévano, who has illustrated other Folio editions of Murakami’s work, said that adapting 1Q84 gave him the chance to experiment while maintaining the essence of the author’s recurring themes.

The Folio Society’s edition of 1Q84 is available for £150 or US $215 exclusively from the publisher’s website.
